Artificial Turf Installation in Vancouver: what is different here

Vancouver has exactly the conditions artificial turf was made for: small back yards, mature trees casting deep shade, and dogs. In a 400 square foot yard under a big Douglas fir, no grass variety is going to succeed, and every year spent trying costs more than the turf would have.

Dog owners are our biggest turf clients in Vancouver. The base is what makes a pet installation work — an open-graded rock base that lets urine flush straight through, and an infill that resists odor rather than sand that holds it. Installed that way, a dog run stays usable and doesn’t smell.

Narrow side yards are the other frequent job. The strip between a Vancouver house and the fence is permanently shaded, permanently damp and permanently muddy. Turf, or turf combined with stepping stones in river rock, ends that for good.

How we build it

  • Excavation and geotextile separation over native clay
  • Compacted free-draining crushed rock base
  • Stretched and secured turf, not loose-laid
  • Glued and stapled seams on seam tape
  • Odor-controlling infill for pet installations
  • Optional shock pad under play areas

Artificial turf earns its keep in exactly the situations where real grass struggles here: deep shade under firs, narrow side yards that never dry out, dog runs that turn to mud by November, and small back yards where mowing is more hassle than the lawn is worth.

Artificial Turf Installation in Vancouver: questions we get

Does artificial turf drain in Pacific Northwest rain?

Yes, when the base is built for it. The turf backing is perforated and the crushed rock base beneath it moves water vertically into the subgrade. The failures we see are installations laid over compacted clay with nowhere for water to go, which puddles and grows algae. Drainage is a base problem, not a turf problem.

How long does artificial turf last?

A quality turf on a properly built base generally gives 15 to 20 years of residential use. Most products carry a manufacturer warranty in the 8 to 15 year range against UV degradation and fiber loss.

Is it safe for dogs?

Yes. Solid waste is picked up as normal and urine drains through the backing into the base. We use an infill that resists odor rather than a sand infill that holds it, and periodic rinsing keeps a pet area fresh.
