What Vancouver yards actually need

Established neighborhoods: renovation and repair

Hough, Shumway, Carter Park, Rose Village and the older parts of Hazel Dell and Minnehaha have mature trees, settled ground and hardscape that is now forty or fifty years old. What we do most there is replacement work: cracked and heaved concrete walkways, timber retaining walls that have finally rotted through, lawns that lost the fight with shade and moss, and drainage that was never installed because nobody worried about it in 1965. Big trees also mean root conflicts, and we design around roots rather than cutting through them.

East Vancouver: smaller lots, bigger ambitions

Cascade Park, Fisher’s Landing, Ellsworth and the Orchards subdivisions tend toward smaller, flatter back yards where the goal is getting maximum use out of limited square footage. That is where paver patios with integrated seat walls, artificial turf instead of a mower-sized lawn, and narrow side yards converted to stepping stone in river rock earn their money.

Stormwater and impervious surface

The City of Vancouver takes stormwater seriously, and larger hardscape projects can run into impervious surface limits depending on your lot and zoning.
